Supreme Court to Review Trump’s Exclusion from Colorado Primaries

The United States Supreme Court will review former President Donald Trump’s challenge against his exclusion from the Colorado primaries. This announcement was made on the eve of the anniversary of the attack on the Capitol, during which President Biden strongly criticized his predecessor.

The case revolves around the judgment of the Colorado Supreme Court on December 19th, which barred Trump from participating in the state’s Republican primaries.

The court found it proven that Trump, in connection to the storming of the Capitol by his supporters on January 6, 2021, had engaged in an insurrection against the United States. The court cited Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

It remains unclear how the Supreme Court will rule.

The justices of the Supreme Court made their decision in an unusually short amount of time. Trump, the leading candidate of his party for the nomination as the challenger to Democratic President Joe Biden in the November elections, filed his appeal on Wednesday. The Colorado Republican Party also appealed on December 27th.

The Supreme Court’s decision remains uncertain. The court is dominated by a conservative majority, with three of the nine justices appointed by Trump. It is particularly unclear whether they will address the question of whether Trump committed insurrection. The court may decide, for example, that Section 3 does not apply to the president. Excluding Trump from the election would be a political earthquake.

“Biden warns against Trump: “A Dagger to Democracy”

On the third anniversary of the storming of the U.S. Capitol, President Joe Biden warned against a potential reelection of Republican Trump. “This is the first national election since the insurrection of January 6th, when American democracy had a dagger put to its throat,” the Democrat said at a campaign event in the state of Pennsylvania. “At the beginning of this election year, we must be aware that the vote is about democracy.”

Biden also accused Trump of using rhetoric from Nazi Germany. “He is willing to sacrifice our democracy to gain power,” said the 81-year-old Democrat. Trump speaks of poisoning the blood of Americans and repeats “exactly the same language used in Nazi Germany.”
