One of the most significant contemporary sculptors has passed away. The US artist Richard Serra died at the age of 85 at his home in Long Island. This was confirmed by Serra’s lawyer John Silberman to the “New York Times”. The cause of death was pneumonia.
“The Poet of Steel”
Born in San Francisco to a Russian mother and a Spanish father, Serra received his education in Paris and moved to New York in the 1960s. Towards the end of the decade, he revealed his work “One Ton Prop (House of Cards)” consisting of four 122×122 centimeter lead plates, balanced as if in a house of cards due to their weight.
Later, Serra focused on large, brown-orange steel plates, exhibited in New York, Washington, Bilbao, or Paris. In 2005, eight significant Serra works were displayed at the Guggenheim Museum in Spain. In 2014, he placed dark towers in the sands of Qatar. Serra’s large-format steel sculptures exhibited in public spaces often sparked controversy among viewers. In 1981, there were calls for the dismantling of “Tilted Arc” in New York. Colleagues referred to Serra as a “Poet of Steel” for his style inspired by the minimalism of the 1970s.
