Days Without Food and Water

The rubber boat set off from Sawija in Libya eight days ago and drifted at sea without food and water for the passengers following an engine failure, as explained by the aid organization.

Rescue Operation by “Ocean Viking”

The survivors were rescued by the “Ocean Viking” search and rescue ship in cooperation with the Italian Coast Guard in the Libyan search and rescue zone.

Over 3,000 Deaths in 2023

Last year, at least 3,105 migrants were reported dead or missing during attempts to cross the Mediterranean to Europe, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Urgent Call to Prevent Further Tragedies

The central Mediterranean route remains one of the most dangerous for refugees heading to Europe. The IOM stressed the need for urgent measures to bolster patrols at sea and prevent additional tragedies.

Efforts to Curtail Refugee Influx

Italy and other EU countries are working to reduce the number of refugees. They have offered Libya and Tunisia financial aid or equipment to prevent people from departing from their coasts.
